Fire Mitigation
For the last several years the EPOA has been committed to budgeting for and completing fire mitigation on all EPOA Common Space areas throughout the community on an annual basis. There are basically five common space areas within the community most associated with our trail system. Each spring, one of the common areas is targeted for fire mitigation. Each area is treated every 3-5 years. Re-treatment is necessary to keep the ladder fuels (mainly oak brush) from growing back. This is best practice as prescribed by the experts. (Colorado State Forest, BLM and Wildfire Adapted Partnership) Residents are responsible for fire mitigation on their own properties if they choose so. WAP and Durango Fire Protection are excellent sources for education and expert help for Edgemont residents.
The Wildfire Adapted Partnership (WAP) Mission
Wildfire Adapted Partnership strives to keep lives, homes, and property from being damaged by wildfire. We provide education, planning and mitigation support to spark wildfire preparedness in the hearts of our neighbors! Click on the link W.A.P. Website.
Are you concerned about the threat of wildfire and the security of your home if there was a wildfire in the area? Not sure what action to take and need a little guidance? WAP provides free individual property assessments and mitigation plans for homeowners.
Spring Clean Up
Take advantage of “Chipper Days” and “Pine Needle Collection” in the spring to create “Defensible Space” around your home. The EPOA hires a contractor to chip the limbs that residents trim from their properties and place beside the road. Dumpsters are provided for pine needle and leaf debris that residents remove from the “ignition zone” of the homes.
